What is a Performance Rights Organization (PRO)? HelpPerformance Rights Organization (PRO)

A performing rights organization represents composers, songwriters, and lyricists by licensing and collect royalties from "public performance" (radio, live, TV airplay).

In the USA, ASCAP (www.ascap.com), BMI (www.bmi.com), and SESAC (www.sesac.com) are performing rights organizations representing composers and songwriters. Songwriters have an exclusive arrangement with one performing rights organization to represent their works.

Recording artists who are not songwriters are not likely affiliated with a PRO.
