Artist Spotlight: Shout Section Big Band

Post new comment

Band Name: Shout Section Big Band

Hometown: Chicago (Brookfield), Illinois

Influences: Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Joe Williams, Thad Jones, Jamie Cullum

Cover Song Licensed: My Favorite Things

Story Behind the Cover: We set out to create a truly warm and inviting big band Christmas album for the 21st Century. Part of creating a warm feeling requires the performers and listeners to recall their “Favorite Things” in life. With the great up-and-coming talent on this CD (some of Chicago’s best new young pro musicians), and the great solo talent that they exhibit, we think this album will be one of the true dark horse gems of the holiday season.

Limelight Artist Six-Pack

Post new comment

Name: Taste of Soul

Hometown: Detroit, Michigan

Influence: David Ruffin, The Temptations, Ollie Woodson, Donny Hathaway, Sam Cooke, Jimmy Ricks, Melvin Franklin, Aretha Franklin, Monica, Jazmine Sullivan, Anthony Hamilton, Prince, New Edition, Brandy, The Dramatics, Five Special, Luther Vandross and Enchantment to name a few.

Cover Song Licensed: Come When I Call

Story Behind the Cover: I first heard of the original tune off of the Snoop Dogg CD – Murder Was The Case, it was recorded by then unknown artist, “Danny Boy” Stewart. After many years and getting the nerve to perform and introduce it to others I decided to cover it. I gathered my instruments and pen and set to arrange my own version of the latest track (Danny Boy re-did the track within the last few years). After three revisions, I finally settled on this version and hope everyone enjoys it.

Name: JT EASY

Hometown : JOSHUA TREE

Influences: Little Feat, Richard Thompson, Bob Dylan, Steve Earle, Kurt Vonnegut, G. I. Gurdjeiff

Cover Song Licensed: For What It’s Worth

Story Behind the Cover: My manager, Jane Quinn (www.mightyquinnmanagement.com), sent me a copy of Stills/Buffalo Springfield’s original version of the song which had been popular when we were kids. She said it was amazing how the song seemed to perfectly describe what is going on in the mid-east today. I whipped out my banjo and did a demo in an upbeat rootsy style, sent it to her in the UK, and she said,”let’s do it”! Within a week, we had a license (thanks, Limelight) and a mix to release. George Galloway did a voice-over intro, and in a few weeks we were on radio and TV in Europe and the UK. It is too early to see what the sales will be like, but the song is getting a lot of exposure. First cover we ever released.

Cover Song Licensed: Watch Over You – Alter bridge

Story Behind the Cover: The first minute I heard the voice of Alter Bridge lead singer, Myles Kennedy, I fell in love with it! A true master of vocal technique and a vocal timbre that blends the range of Jeff Buckley with 80′s epic metal but with a fresh resonance. As a vocalist myself and 15 years old at the time, I began covering Alter Bridge songs. A few years later and after youtube started becoming popular, I decided to put my cover of “Watch Over You” out there to see what people will say! Little did I know the response would be immense!! 100,000 views later, Watch Over You was well received by Alter Bridge fans around the world, praising my vocal abilities and the way I transformed what was a hard rock song and gave it a more pop sensibility. And in turn, I have to thank Myles and Alter Bridge for making me a better musician….2 years later, I re-made the cover, this time being more creative and putting together a video collage of a “one m an band”, playing all instruments and singing the song.

Artist Spotlight: Thisbe Vos

Thisbe Vos Cover SongBorn close to Amsterdam in The Netherlands, Thisbe Vos has been making music from a young age. Thisbe discovered jazz through radio and tv commercials, at seventeen she joined a British swing band and toured with them for several years. she has performed in musicals, clubs, festivals, radio and television shows in over 30 cities in Europe and America. She recently cleared the licensing for a cover song with LimeLight. Learn more about the cover tune below!

Band Name: Thisbe Vos

Hometown: Los Angeles (originally from Huizen, The Netherlands)

Influences: Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Peggy Lee, Doris Day, Norah Jones

Cover Song Licensed: My Favorite Things

Story Behind the Cover: I heard this song in the movie The Sound of Music when I was younger and I thought right away that it would make a good jazz song. I have been wanting to record a jazz version of it for a long time. I only found out much later that the song had already been covered by many jazz artists (so I was right, that it would make a good jazz song ha ha ha).
Only no one covered it the way I had it in mind. My version is a very slow, laid back jazz cover, very different from the way it is usually done.

Top Ten Cover Songs For A City That Never Sleeps – New York.

Post new comment

Over the years, various hit songs have been written about or been inspired by New York City.  Stories of wild nights out, and dreams of success, are just the beginning of the themes out there. You’ll even find songs that originally were not about the city, but have become strongly associated with it (New York has that way of pulling things in).  Regardless, my time as an Intern at RightsFlow will soon be coming to an end, along with this, my time here in New York City (for now). Keeping that in mind, this top ten list of favorite New York cover songs is dedicated to the city, our team at RightsFlow (the company that powers Limelight), and everyone in it.
